Character Name: Ethan Chandler
Series: Penny Dreadful
Timeline: Grand Guignol 1-8
Canon Resource Link: Wiki Not much here, unfortunately, but it gets the point across.
Character History: Ethan’s past is shrouded in mystery. Even at the end of the first season we have only been given glimpses, and hints as to what his life had been like before encountering Miss Vanessa Ives. What is known about his life pre-series, is that he was the son of a fairly well-off family, however he also had a falling out with his father, and had joined the Army at one point in time before joining with a circus.
It is also known that before the show Ethan had been up to some rather questionable things, things that had left a lot of people dead in his wake, and him being hunted by Federal Marshalls back in the States, along with his father. Again, it has yet to be stated exactly what it was that he had done to incur the wrath of the American Government, but whatever it was had left him both haunted, and running.
Eventually he ended joining a traveling, Wild West show as a sharp shooter and story teller. He appeared rather good at what he did as well, showing an ability to capture on audience and a loud, auditory voice. It wasn’t long before he had made the trip across the ocean to England, where his skills were noticed by one Vanessa Ives – who had seemed to have taken an instant liking to the man. Similarly Ethan seemed to have taken an interest in her as well, after she had shown her abilities of perception, the reading of body language. After a brief conversation he was given a job offer from Vanessa to work for one Sir Malcolm.
Feeling both curious, and having been tempted into the job by the prospect of a better life outside of the Wild West show, Ethan took up the offer. It was during the first job that he had worked with the group, clearing out a vampire next, that he had proven himself both a capable and valuable asset to the group. Having both held his own and helped to protect the group from the ambush after having taken notice to them being surrounded. Following the fight he had found himself both angered and bewildered by what he had encountered that night.
A few days later he was eventually called on again to see Sir Malcolm, only to once again meet with Vanessa. Upon a brief conversation he was asked by her whether or not he considered himself to a wise man; to which Ethan replied with a straight no. With Vanessa replying that a wise man would walk away from the house and forget all that was experienced. Later during this conversation Ethan pointed out that he had been a hired gun before and found “…no exaltation in killing for gold.” To which she replied, “A wise man after all.”
A few days later Ethan could be found at the waterfront of London in a local inn. Here he meets, and immediately forms a deep relationship with, a young, Irish immigrant named Brona Croft; with Brona seemingly drawn in by Ethan’s charm and sincere kindness towards her. It is through their interactions with each other that Ethan learns the woman has contracted Consumption, or as we know it today, tuberculoses.
Following this event he would continue to be used by Sir Malcolm and his newly formed group. This time, however, he seeks the man out on his own volition for money in order to help Brona. On their next trip they would travel onwards to a zoo where they believed Sir Malcolm’s daughter to be held by the group of vampires they were hunting. During this the group had the misfortune of running into a group of escaped wolves. But instead of engaging them he had managed to keep the group calm and drive the wolves off, thus allowing them to reach their target without much trouble in the way.
Unfortunately Mina was not present at the zoo, but one of the head vampire’s thralls is. Following a brief altercation, they manage to capture the boy and bring them back to the manor to be studied, much to Ethan’s chagrin; and he expresses a disdain to using the boy as a guinea pig, or torturing him for information. But Sir Malcolm quickly quieted him, and reminded him that no one person in that room was completely innocent. And so the group goes on to conduct a series of experiments on the thrall in order to find a cure for vampirism.
The following day sees Ethan lying in bed with Brona, who admits to him that she had been engaged once to a man with hard hands – hands that he would use to be harsh towards her before running away and turning to prostitution to earn money. After the confession Ethan became rather somber, stating that everyone has done sinful things in order to survive and that there had been things that he wishes had never happened. But then he immediately lightens the mood again by suggesting they go out after he was done with the day’s work.
That day saw the group attempt to cure the boy by attempting a blood transfusion, with Victor requesting that Ethan donate his blood. However he refuses, having previously stated his dislike for the idea of experimenting on the lad. To which Sir Malcolm ends up agreeing to give his own blood.
Unfortunately the experiment fails and Ethan leaves the house both frustrated, and afraid, of what they were doing, as well as what had become of the boy. But he would quickly brighten his outlook later during the night for his date with Brona. Unfortunately the night does not end well for them, with Brona collapsing in a fit of blood filled coughs, due to tuberculoses. And Ethan running off to spend the night with Dorian Gray in an effort to try and lose himself in the night.
The following morning showed a much calmer side between the two, all rage and anguish having simmered down following the night. Brona, having been infected for quite a while admitted that she didn’t have much time left; and, worrying for Ethan, suggested that he not approach her anymore. However Ethan was having none of that, and instead passionately kissed Brona, and in that moment of love, she gave him her necklace of Saint Jude, the patron saint of lost and desperate causes, for luck.
That night he would be summoned once more to meet with Sir Malcolm for a mission to a plague ship being held in port where Mina was possibly being held. Once there a frantic fight began to ensue, with the horde of vampires aboard the ship attacking the group all at once. And while Mina was present the head vampire soon takes her and escapes as a fire breaks out onboard. The group manages to escape back to the mansion, once there Ethan attempts to calm Sir Malcolm by stating that his daughter was still living. However Malcolm was not having any of it, but Ethan continued saying that they needed to hold trust in one another in order to succeed in the end, lest they face countless defeats in the future.
Leaving in an angry huff, Ethan soon returns the following night. After being summoned he was greeted with sounds of screaming and rushes to find Vanessa in some rather dire looking straights. He is then informed that she was possessed by a demon that was currently attempting to take over her soul. Ethan, shocked by this, recommends that they call for a priest, which is then shot down by the rest of the group. Now, trapped in the house together, the group quickly becomes stressed over one another as they each attempt to watch and care for, Vanessa through her ordeal. Eventually they slowly begin to calm their tempers with one another and begin to take the time to learn about one another.
With Victor, Ethan begins to tell him stories of some of the things that he had witnessed, one in particular focused on how the Army would pacify Native tribes, stating it as being one of the saddest things he has ever seen. It isn’t long before he also teaches Victor how to properly shoot and handle a gun. Ethan also spends some time with Sir Malcolm, though the two still do not enjoy the other’s presence, they come to tolerate each other a bit more, with Ethan eventually telling Malcolm to accept Vanessa as a daughter.
The incident comes to a head eventually, when they finally call for a priest, at both Sembene’s and Ethan’s request. It proved hopeless, though, as the man was only capable of giving her last rights, but nothing more. Soon all men, but Ethan, were thrown from the room. In a desperate, last ditch effort; Ethan was given the choice by Vanessa to shoot her and put her out of her misery. However he decides on another route; and instead begins to perform an exorcism of his own. Using the necklace that Brona had given him while repeating the prayer to Saint Jude in Latin.
Through sheer force of will, faith and desperation, Ethan succeeds in pacifying the demon - thus saving Vanessa from her torment. However Ethan’s problems were only just beginning. Not to long after the ordeal he returns to an ever worsening Brona. He spends the next few days praying and caring for the woman he had come to love as she slowly wasted away. Eventually he was forced to seek out the help of Victor in a last ditch effort to, at the very least, bring her some form of comfort for her last few moments of living.
Unfortunately her end was brought on even faster as Victor smothered her with a pillow, thus snuffing out her life while Ethan was not present with her. Upon returning and finding her dead, Ethan finally broke down in a fit of tears by her side. Things were made ever worse when a group of men, hired by his own father, come for him in order to drag him back to the States in chains. Of course Ethan was going to have none of it, and instead fights off the group and sets out to help Malcolm seek out the head vampire to end everything, and hopefully, rescue Mina.
The group arrive at the theater that Ethan had taken Brona to and instantly begin to clash against the vampire horde and their master. Though they fought hard, Ethan, Sembene and Victor were eventually overwhelmed by sheer numbers. Fortunately Sir Malcolm and Vanessa were capable of killing the head vampire, thus ending it’s hold over the thralls. Unfortunately Mina was still alive, now a vampire herself she attempts to bite Vanessa, only to be dispatched by Sir Malcolm, who stated that he had come to think of Vanessa as a daughter.
A few days following the fight saw Ethan brooding in the bar that he had met Brona in, drinking. But the two men who were tracking him were none to pleased with his prior escape, and quickly corner and begin mocking him. A mistake, as the anger and grief that he had been feeling was soon to be unleashed by the full moon. To everyone’s surprise Ethan transforms into what can only be described as a wolfman, that proceeds to slaughter everyone in it’s way.
The following morning showed a dazed Ethan walking the waterfront in shambles.
Abilities/Special Powers: Ethan has been shown to be a werewolf, a person who is capable of transforming into a wolfman when the moon is full and bright. As a werewolf Ethan has some rather special traits that make him stand out from others.
As a human:
Ability to communicate with wolves: Now while this doesn’t outright mean that he can talk to them, he does seem to hold some form of power over them. As demonstrated in the zoo where he was able to not only hold off a pack of them, but also drive them away after one appeared to gently take his fingers in its mouth and backing away. As an interesting side note, anything canine seems to be capable of recognizing him for what he is. As ever now and again when the camera focuses on him, a person can occasionally here dogs barking off in the background.
As a wolf:
Claws and fangs: Ethan’s claws have been shown to be more than capable of rending human flesh from bone in a single stroke. Similarly he seems to have a rather impressive set of choppers in his mouth, all the better to rip you apart with.
Increased Strength and speed: As a wolf Ethan appears to be more than capable of tossing a man aside with ease. As well as have the necessary speed to go along with it, as he zooms from one victim to the next.
Third-Person Sample: Ethan was a man who has seen a lot of bizarre and unexplainable things in his life. He has faced off against vampires; seen ancient ruins built in cliffs, banished a demon and even had sex with another man! But none of that seemed to compare to the wonderment and madness that this “Wonderland” had to offer. That being said Ethan was still not all that happy with being flung from one place to another without much say in the matter. That being said he was not entirely certain what to make of the idea of a world that takes people from their own universes.
If he understood correctly, that is.
Either way he felt as though the name seemed to suit the place well enough. It certainly is filled with quite a few unearthly wonderments, and odd denizens. That being said Ethan knew that he would have to find out more about this place before letting himself be moved entirely unto anger. He knew that if he wished to survive in this strange…mansion, if one could call it that; he needed to gather as much information as possible. Survival would be the top priority here, and he was good at surviving.
Most of his life had been spent surviving, running and regretting actions long sense passed.
But if he could accomplish this then, maybe, just maybe, he could find a way out. Though Ethan did not have very high hopes for the most part, but he had to at least entertain the thought. Nothing good would ever come from something taking a person without their consent, and then trap them in a prison. Even least of all with other strangers who may, or may not be hostile towards you and yours.
First thing was first, he had to find a place, or someone that would feel familiar, safe and most importantly, helpful.
Second Third
He had expected to wake up the very next morning on a cold pier at the docks of London, sweating, confused and somewhat bedraggled -- but otherwise alive and well, or at least as well as he could be.
But it should be noted that without his guns, Ethan felt naked, exposed and lacking a part of himself. Every now and again his fingers would twitch by his side as they attempted to run over what was no longer there. He doesn’t like this feeling, yes he is just as capable without them this is true.
But that doesn’t change the fact that he was in an unknown environment without his constant companions. His lips twitched at the thought, companions…. Perhaps he would be capable of finding a living companion here? It was worth a shot, there had to be someone here that he could at least marginally trust; but where to go and what to do?
Ethan chewed on those thoughts for just a moment longer before a hand reached forward to grasp the doorknob and pull it open. There was no sense in standing on the porch all day, after all. He had answers to find, people to meet, and possibly kill.
First-Person Sample: [The images being shown on the device would spun right round in several directions; though more detailed oriented people may catch a glimpse of a man’s face on the other side as this was going on. For the most part Ethan was rather fascinated by the device, fingers running over the various buttons that he could feel. It was quite the marvelous thing indeed, not unlike those of cameras and voice recorders - though so far the device proved to be much, much smaller, sleeker and more reliable.
Technology at it’s finest, he decided. Even as his eyebrows knitted together in confusion as to how he was to work the device itself.]
I must say that this device is quite the fantastic little thing, ain’t it? It rightly behooves me that one would just give them out on a whim.
[The voice sounded like an exaggerated version of a southern accent, and a few twists and turns later, the screen finally focused on his face.] So other folks are meant to be able to see me, and me them, is that right?
[Marvelous indeed.]
